Body awareness

Our project is going to be related to body awareness. So it is important to know what that is about. In the literature there are existing different definitions on body awareness. Roxendal and Winberg (2002) define two different dimensions of body awareness: the experience and the movement dimension. The first dimension focuses on the experience of the body and the second dimension on the actions and and behavior in movement and activities. Gyllensten (2001) sees it more in form of a treatment approach “an awareness of how the body is used in terms of body function, behavior, and interaction with self and others”. Both approaches can be related to a philosophical background, where “we exist in our world through our bodies” (Gyllensten et al. 2010). The authors here rely on Merleau-Ponty (1962) who states that “the body is objective and subjective at the same time”.

For our project we have to find and compare those and other definitions of body awareness in order to have an underlying foundation on the matter.
